Ingredients:
- 4 pounds of apples (any sweet-tart variety works well)
- 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar (use 1 cup if using very tart apples)
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour (for the topping)
- 1 cup old fashioned or rolled oats
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for the topping)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for the topping)
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup (16 tablespoons) unsalted butter, softened
Prep Time: 25 minutes
Cook Time: 45-50 minutes
Total Time: 70-75 minutes
Servings: 8-10
Equipment:
- 13x9-inch casserole dish
- Apple slicer/peeler (optional)
- Mixing bowls
- Measuring cups and spoons
Instructions:
1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and butter a 13x9-inch casserole dish.
2. Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples. Place them in a large bowl.
3. Squeeze 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice over the apples; toss to coat. This prevents browning and adds flavor.
4. In a small bowl, mix together 3/4 cup of granulated sugar, 3 tablespoons of flour, and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. Adjust sugar to 1 cup if you’re using tart apples like Granny Smith.
5. Sprinkle the sugar-flour mixture over the apples, tossing to ensure all slices are coated evenly.
6. Arrange apple slices in the buttered casserole dish in an even layer. Set this aside.
7. For the topping: In a large bowl, combine 1 3/4 cups flour, 1 cup rolled oats, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon salt.
8. Add the softened butter to the bowl. Use your fingertips or a pastry cutter to work the butter into the dry ingredients until pea-sized crumbs form.
9. Spread the crumb topping evenly over the apple slices.
10. Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling at the edges.
11. Remove from the oven and let rest for 10-15 minutes to cool slightly before serving.
12. Serve warm, ideally with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream.
Cooking Tip: If you don’t have an apple slicer, a sharp knife will do just fine for peeling and cutting the apples. Keep a consistent thickness for even baking.
